It began on a surfboard, with Tom on his belly paddling face-first through plastic bottles, Styrofoam cups and garbage bags that snagged on his fin. Shocked by the volumes of trash, Tom started researching the issue—the uncontrolled growth of single-use plastics, sad truths about plastic recycling (the U.S. rate is less than 9%), the cascade of ecological damage caused by ocean plastic. Though reassured by the growing field of ocean-plastic scientists and environmental activists, Tom realized most Americans are too busy and distracted to care about such a distant problem. He developed ReSUP to change that.
For the next phase of his plastic journey, Tom will soon paddle from San Francisco to Hawaii, straight through the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Learn More
